The Road Review
The movie “The Road” starts with a couple fighting on a highway at night, meeting a gruesome end by the hands of criminals. However, their deaths are portrayed as a road accident. When the protagonist, Meera (played by Trisha), plans a road trip with her family, we immediately worry for their safety. Before Meera’s husband Anand (Santhosh Pratap) and son Kavin set out on the trip, we endure some artificial family scenes that may make us uncomfortable due to their insincerity.
Thankfully, the movie quickly gets into the main plot, with two storylines unfolding simultaneously. Meera copes with her loss, discovering that the accident was planned. With the help of Subramani (MS Baskar), a constable, and Anu (Miya George), her friend, she tries to uncover the culprits. Meanwhile, we witness the disgrace faced by Maya (Shabeer Kallarakkal), a college professor in a village near Madurai. He is falsely accused of sexual misconduct by a student who is obsessed with him.
Director Arun Vaseegaran surprises the audience with the way these two distinct storylines intersect. The investigation part is engaging, maintaining the mystery until the reveal. The film effectively captures Trisha’s vulnerable side, evoking fear for her safety. One particularly thrilling scene set in a maze of rocks stands out. The most commendable aspect of the movie is how it prompts empathy for the antagonist. The writing in this part is strong, convincingly portraying a significant character’s transformation.
However, the movie becomes somewhat ordinary after the mastermind behind the highway crimes is revealed. It feels like the film runs out of fresh ideas and drags on towards the end. The filmmaking is serviceable, but the overpowering background score by Sam CS sometimes overwhelms the audience.
Nevertheless, Shabeer Kallarakal’s performance shines, portraying a character with many layers and delivering an outstanding portrayal.

The actress, who was last seen in Leo, recently joined Ajith’s Vidaa Muyarchi. She is reuniting with Ajith after almost a decade. Additionally, she has two Malayalam movies lined up, Ram and Identity. Her debut Telugu series, Brinda, is also preparing for release. Meanwhile, her long-delayed project Sathuranga Vettai, in which she stars alongside Arvind Swami, is still awaiting release. It is likely that she will have at least two releases in 2023.
